On the Road to Plzen and Our Last Days in the Czech Replubic

Day 1: Prague to Horovice, 39.4 miles

This is the first time on the trip where we don’t follow a river the entire way. Our ride today is a bit more strenuous than some of our flatter miles have been. It’s hot and part of our ride is on a fairly busy road. We also keep thinking we’re closer than we are to our destination so it seems to take longer than we expect. Total miles to date 383.3.

This railroad bridge crossing is not for the faint of heart. Fortunately no train comes along while we are on the bridge.
Horovice chips and beer
We are tired and thirsty as we roll into Horovice. We have an hour until we can check into our hotel. And though they don’t take credit cards, we are able to scrape together just enough cash to buy two beers and some chips. These vices never tasted so good.

Day 2: Horovice to Plzen, 34.1 miles

Going to Plzen is really a couple of days out of our way, but we want to learn more about Pilsner, the namesake beer of this beautiful city. After wandering around town seeing some of the interesting architecture, we take a fascinating tour at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. It was here that the process for making beer was improved and the Pilsner style of beer was created. The Czechs are rightfully proud of their beer heritage. . Total MTD 417.4.

dumplings
Kelly prefers potato dumplings (the ones that are smaller and yellow); Robin likes the bread ones better. This is one of many things we learn during our visit to the Czech Republic.

Day 3: Plzen to Primda, 45.9 miles

Back on our bikes again and today’s ride is challenging. Not only is it a bit longer, but we start in the rain the first few miles, then we have the wind against us, and to top it off we have lots of steep climbs. Total elevation game was over 3100 feet to Primda. Total MTD 466.9.
