Top Sights in Berlin: From the Wall to Checkpoint Charlie

We successfully fly our bikes from Edinburgh to Berlin and get our first bike ride of the trip in. It is 21 miles on flat, paved bike ways. It’s amazing that we are able to ride from the airport to the center of Berlin on separate paths or lanes the entire way!

In Berlin, we split a German meal for two that could have easily fed four: duck, pork, sausages, dumplings, kraut and more. And no, we did not finish it!

After just a couple of days we’ve only scratched the surface. But we can truly say that Berlin is an amazing city. We’ve already made plans to come back. We took a lengthy walking tour dealing with the history of Hitler’s Third Reich, and saw great views from the dome atop the Parliament building.

We visited the Berlin Wall / Checkpoint Charlie Museum, saw the art gallery that was made out of the last 3/4 mile of the wall, and took a super fast elevator for great views of the city. Our bike tour officially starts tomorrow after we take the train to Potsdam.

The East Side Gallery is a 3/4 mile long section of the Berlin wall left standing to serve as an outdoor art exhibit. This panel shows Mikhail Gorbachev in the driver’s seat.

car park where Hitler is buried.
Such a fitting “monument.” This car park sits on top of the bunker where Hitler committed suicide. Germany deliberately prevents Neo-Nazi scum from creating any sort of shrine. This is what used to be East Berlin.
