Our First Experience at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of the largest performing arts festivals in the world. It happens during a three week time period every August in Edinburgh, Scotland. There are shows on the streets, shows in tents, and shows in venues all over the city. Until we visited Edinburgh in 2023 a couple of weeks before the festival started, we had no idea how big of a deal it is.

So, we decide to combine a stop at the Fringe for a few days with our month long bike trip in Germany and the Czech Republic. Things do not start out too well. For mechanical reasons our flight from Washington, D.C. to Edinburgh is cancelled. We get rebooked on a new flight the next day so the airline puts us up in a D.C. hotel. Fortunately, we have the Capital One Venture X card and that gets us access to a nice airport lounge in D.C.

12 hours later we’re back in the lounge hoping we get to Edinburgh this time.

We finally arrive in Edinburgh around 7 a.m. Monday morning. We are beat but still are able to get in all our booked shows for the Fringe. They do not disappoint and we’re looking forward to a full slate of shows over the next two days.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe literally takes over the city for most of the month of August. This is just one of the dozens of venues used for the various shows that cover nearly every type of performance art. Our favorites are the comedy shows and, of course, the Billy Joel tribute band.
Tour guide
In addition to seeing shows, we take some time to do a walking history tour of Edinburgh. It is fascinating and our guide is very knowledgeable.
