36 Days Cycling Portugal and Spain

We have been wanting to cycle the Iberian Peninsula for a long time. While we have been to Spain a few times, we’ve never been to Portugal. This will be our first time using our new folding bikes on an overseas trip. We’re hoping that because they fold in half, this will make them easier to lug around airports and trains. Here’s our itinerary:

  • Fly to Lisbon.
  • Visit Lisbon.
  • Ride the west and south coasts of Portugal.
  • Take a ferry to Spain.
  • Ride to Sevilla.
  • Train to Salamanca via Madrid.
  • Ride to León.
  • Train to Valencia.
  • Ride to Barcelona.
  • Fly home.

After landing in Lisbon and going through customs, we unwrap our bikes and begin the seven mile ride into the city. Unfortunately it is pouring down rain a big part of the way and we have a couple of navigation errors to contend with. Eventually we check in, change out of our wet clothes and head out to do some sightseeing.

bikes in airport
Our bagged and folded bikes arrive safely in Portugal.
Picture of Cousins
We meet up with Robin’s cousins, Karen and Bill Cobb. We haven’t seen them in easily a year, but they happen to be in Lisbon the same days we are.
Lisbon Terrace
Across from our hotel is a public terrace with beautiful views of the city.
Portuguese stonework
Lisbon’s streets and plazas are covered with these black and white stones, in dozens of different designs. We find out along our ride that these are common across the country.
Food tour
One of our favorite things to do in a new city is a guided food and drink walking tour.
Pastel de nata
We learn that pastel de nata, a small custard tart, is popular all over Portugal.
