Following the Eurovelo 6 Bicycle Route from Besançon to Basel

Day 1: Besançon to Montbéliard, 63.5 miles

Our first real day of riding is both beautiful and challenging. Eating baguettes along the river in the sun was beautiful but it is also a tough ride  with a strong headwind. We also have a few missed turns and some detours along the way. Total miles to date, including our ride from the airport 83.4.

Start of EV 6
The start of our ride, on the Eurovelo 6 in Besançon, is flat, paved, and follows the River Doubs for many miles.
Baguettes by the river
After some climbing away from the river, we visit a bakery and take time to enjoy some fresh baguette.
Large portions
In Montbéliard, we refuel with döner kebab and fries (pommes frites).

Day 2: Montbéliard to Basel, 59 miles

We have another long ride, but no rain and less wind. At mile 43 the route turns south and we eventually change from EV 6 to EV 15 the last few miles to Basel. So far on this trip, we speak French as much as our limited vocab allows. But today is an abrupt switch to German. We also find that Swiss businesses only selectively accept Euros; a little better research would have told us that they use Swiss Francs. Thank goodness for credit cards. Total MTD 142.4

Rhine River bridge
On turning south, we begin following the Rhine River instead of the Doubs. We are on or near the Rhine most of the rest of the trip. We cross this bridge into Basel, Switzerland where our hotel is located.
We ride one of Basel’s engineless ferries across the Rhine. The ferry is connected to a steel cable and uses only the river’s current to propel it across.
